Last circle line party!

I attended the last circle line party today on the London tube. Due to the stupidly of Boris Johnson legislating for a problem that doesn't exist (I thought the idiot Conservatives didn't want a nanny state) this was the last night you could legally drink on the tube, bus or DLR. I must say that some people were taking it a little too far (smashed bottles and ripping the carrages up), the atmostphere was quite fun.

Why the Amazon A-Z Guarantee is useless for sellers...

I've sold about 50 items over the last year on amazon using their marketplace feature. All in all it has been a pretty good experience. Buyers seem to pay a pretty good rate for CDs on there.

However, I have a couple of big reservations which I is why I have decided to stop using it.

1. Their fees are very high and they even charge fees on the postage they charge the seller!

2. The Amazon A-Z Guarantee seems useless for sellers. As I've mentioned... I've sold over 50 items, but a couple of weeks ago I had a complaint. One of my buyers had not recieved their item. Now, whether he was telling the truth or not is another matter, but a 1 in 50 hit rate using royal mail isn't bad.
Therefore I got the buyer to launch a claim with the A-Z Guarantee that I thought was there to protect buyers and sellers from this. It turns out that sellers have no protection. I got an automated response telling me that I was responsible and I had to refund the money.

So, the massive fees paid to amazon to facilitate the transactions do not cover you at all for any loss by the post office, even though they barely charge buyers enough to cover 2nd class postage of the item.

What I'd like to know is why Amazon give the impression that the A-Z Guarantee is worth something to sellers when clearly its not!

The Most Perfect Technical Glitch

Converting a Philips Showline 9350i to Digital TV (DVB) and Vista

I just picked up one of these great media center PC's off of ebay for £200. Unfortunately they have dual analogue tuners which are nigh on useless these days. Therefore I went to Maplin and picked up a USB dual tuner DVB TV adapter (K-world 399U I think) for £40.
I plugged it in but couldn't get XP Media center to work with it so I decided to install Vista.

Firstly I backed up the partitions using Acronis True Image Home. This was very important as the 9350i does not come with any recovery media!

I then added another 1GB of RAM to the 9350i as Vista is notoriously memory hungry. It takes standard DDR2 RAM (533Mhz or faster preferred but I used 400Mhz and it worked fine).

I installed vista and everything worked fine apart from three things:

1. No sound. The sound did not work initially. It took me ages to get it working....eventually I found that backup I took very useful as on the original C drive of the install there is a folder called Philips and in there was drivers for all the hardware. The audio driver in there was the only one I could find that worked so don't lose them!

2. Stuttering picture on live TV. I googled this and found the answer to be that Microsoft's Vista bundled MPEG2 decoder sucks. I downloaded NVidia's PureVideo decoder, rebooted and everything worked perfectly! You need to use this tool to change the default codec: link

3. Front Panel display says "Starting Up" constantly. I haven't fixed this problem yet. The drivers/program for this did not install properly on Vista. Anyone got any ideas?

How unlucky was this?!

I went out with my friend Emma the other night to go down to Riley's in Clapham for a bit of pool or snooker.
Jimmy White is visiting there in a few weeks and she signed me up for a competition to play against him. Apart from it being potentially highly embarrassing due to our names being the same, I am absolutely dreadful at snooker. Oh well, anyway, on the left is the most crazy shot that I've ever made. Isle of Wight Festival!

Last night I got back from the Isle of Wight Festival. I had a great weekend!
Highlights included Chris Martin's crouch song, the amazing light and laser shows that accompanied the Foo Fighters and Coldplay andmeeting a load of great people including camping with the Girls in Green Shoes.

The weather was amazing, I can't remember a better weekend of weather here. I have the slight redness to prove it :)

First of all, well done to the Gunners last night. Of course I'm disappointed we didn't win, but you need a bit of luck and I think Barcelona had it on their side. We played our hearts out and thats all any fan could ask.

Fairwell Highbury....

....hello ashburton grove! I loved highbury, it was one of the only stadiums in the Premiership that most of the seats were very close to the pitch. However, it was impossible to get tickets for league games so hopefully i'll be able to go a lot more next season starting with Dennis Bergkamp's Testimonial on 22nd July!

I got this this morning. Its survived at least 5 crashes and i've got it to 20ft so far! (too scared to go higher). Its great fun, can't wait for lunchtime. Hopefully it'll survive the rest of the day :)

Finally! A quiet and powerful PC that does everything I want.

I've just finished building my PC and am very very pleased. I picked up a cheap refurb Dell 5150 from ebay and chucked in another 3 hard disks (4 in total with a bit of hacking and power splitting) and a dual DVB-T (digital TV) tuner PCI-E card. All running Windows Media Center 2005.

It rocks!

I love this new BTX motherboard format. The PC (even with the 4 drives) is almost inaudible!

Welcome!

Hey Guys,

Welcome to my first blog. Its been a while since I first heard about this blogging phenomenon and thought it was time I had my own to replace the aging 'About Me' page :) My exams start next week and am getting nervous, oh well, it'll all be over soon.

Anyway, enough for now I should be doing some work. Look out for the verydodgy.com article that will appear in the Financial Times on a Saturday in June. Very exciting for me!
